Behind the performance of flapping flyers

چکیده
A recent field of investigation concerns the efficiency of flapping flyers, the major interrogation being about how natural systems optimize energy saving together with performance enhancement. In particular, the passive role of wing flexibility to increase flight efficiency through the bending of the wings while flapping has attracted a lot of attention. It is commonly agreed that this efficiency enhancement comes from the particular shape of the bent wing, which leads to a more favorable repartition of the aerodynamic forces (see [5] and [6] for an extensive review). However, quantifying the amount of deformation is not sufficient to explain the performance enhancement that is observed; and the temporal evolution of the wing shape is also of critical importance.

Smart flapping wing using Macro-Fiber Composite actuators
In the present study, we have developed a smart flapping wing with a MFC (macro-fiber composites) actuator. To mimic the flying mechanisms of nature’s flyers such as birds or insects, the aerodynamic characteristics related to the birds and ornithopters are investigated. To measure the aerodynamic forces of flapping devices, a test stand consisting of two loadcells is manufactured, and the dyna...

The flapping wing flight has superior maneuverability and aerodynamic advantages in a low Reynolds number regime. Nature’s flyers generate aerodynamic forces and moments from the various wing motions such as flapping and pitching to fly and sustain its flight stability. Bioinspired design of flapping air vehicle is one of the effective ways to exploit such a complex system. However the flapping...
متن کاملThe influence of flight style on the aerodynamic properties of avian wings as fixed lifting surfaces
The diversity of wing morphologies in birds reflects their variety of flight styles and the associated aerodynamic and inertial requirements. Although the aerodynamics underlying wing morphology can be informed by aeronautical research, important differences exist between planes and birds. In particular, birds operate at lower, transitional Reynolds numbers than do most aircraft. To date, few q...
متن کاملA CFD-informed quasi-steady model of flapping wing aerodynamics.
Aerodynamic performance and agility during flapping flight are determined by the combination of wing shape and kinematics. The degree of morphological and kinematic optimisation is unknown and depends upon a large parameter space. Aimed at providing an accurate and computationally inexpensive modelling tool for flapping-wing aerodynamics, we propose a novel CFD (computational fluid dynamics)-in...

Research in the field of Flapping Wing Micro Air Vehicle (FMAV) is an ongoing quest to master the natural flyers by mechanical means. The field is characterized by unsteady aerodynamics, whose knowledge is still developing. Birds and insects have different methods of producing lift and thrust for hovering and forward flight. Most birds, however, cannot hover. Wing tips of birds follow simple pa...
